Hymn de Fin — 09.27.13

(Source: flickr)

Guess what, chickenbutts—it's music time! Don't you dare be caught crossing the street without your sweet tunes or your super suits. This week we've got White Fences and White Denim, a little 50s/60s influence once again (it's inescapable these days), some fun-time covers and a soft punch of an ending by Night Beds (covering a song from Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master). This promises to be a get-me-through-the-rainy-weekend grab-bag of tunes. God bless.

Pure Plutonium

Back in the days of Dr. Helicopter, I had the pleasure of playing a show with these fantasmic dudes. They execute a killer set—all kinds of serious funk, beard hair, unearthly body motions and gold necklaces. I sure hope they're still around, balancing the universe. Really...watch this:

See that contraption? Bottom heavy. That's why I decided to start this week's mix with the heavy on top—like a sweet dollop of Cool hhhWhip. This'n's kicked off by Ty Segall's side project, Fuzz (and he means it). Elsewhere and in between, things get folky, get Portlandy, get Austin Texasy, get Willbilly and maybe even a bit dream poppy. The weekend's coming. Time to get back up on that big-wheeled beast and take 'er for a ride!

{Oh: starting now, I'm including links to the music, so that ya'll can go on exploring these suhweet bands all by your lonesome. Let me know if you find something righteous! The mix will still play in its entirety in the Streampad at the bottom of the blog! Enjoy.}

The Segall Has Landed...

Today I feel like paying tribute to Mr. Ty Segall. Eminent rockerPurveyor of awesome. All around hip old soul. How does he do it? Did he learn from this guy? Some people get all the cool jeans (I mean genes)—just watch him play these drums.

He's like the coolest little kid I've ever seen. And his taste in music? All over the place—in the best ways. God bless him. If you haven't checked him out yet, do so. You won't regret it.

Unknown My A**

Hilarious, right?? This past Friday our dear friend Paul and these fine fellows played with these other fine fellows as part of NW Music Fest. C and I almost went. Instead we attended this. It was the right choice at the time—but...aren't these guys suhhhhweet?? Another video below (a Dirty Projectors cover). Check it.

Raise your hand if you like sweet, soulful music. It's been awhile since the last mix, but this one here will make up for lost time. Let's travel back a ways to the dusty past—where music was lo-fi, guitars were twangy (maybe fuzzy (maybe murky (maybe all three))), and the beat was always steady. We got some Black Mountain funk, dirty psych-folk with tape hiss, the too-cool Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Bon Iver's friend Phil Cook, and even a surprise visit from Dolly Parton—slowed down to the pitch of a slow-chuggin' train. Just click on the music bar at the bottom and enjoy!

Hymn de Fin — 12.14.12

Let's get down to business. This aint no time for chitchat. It's friday. C and I are going to The Nutcracker tonight and that means I'm gonna have some freaky dreams, so I thought I'd share the wealth. Here are some dreamy new tunes—grooviness from Ombre's Helado Negro, an old demo from the mighty Daniel Rossen, newness from ex-Girl drummer, Darren Weiss. Oh! and a heap of creepy/dreamy coolness from New Fumes and The Flaming Lips. Move over Tchaikovsky, there's a new mix in town.

A Week of Hymns — 10.09.12

I know. I'm late. So here, instead of a weekend of new music, take this—a week of it. Enjoy some spooky pop in your coffee to get yourself prepped for Halloween. Drop an unsuspecting Motown group down a well and take a gander at the sound that comes back up. Tired of snare drum clicks? Me neither. Tired of 80s synths? Me too—but it's just about unavoidable. I sifted as best I could to keep the Flock of Seagulls sound to a minimum. Turn it up and keep on keepin on.

Shades / fedora / sleek black suit—what else do you need? Step into this weekend Cadillac and slip down-street. Keep your cuff-linked arm at all times draped from the window and keep it cool, man—people might stare. Gander at this week's mix if you're having any trouble. Whether it's long-haired Kurt Vile registering little more than a cool blip on the radar, or the trickling keys and cool voice of Jessica Dobson and Deep Sea Diver, or the newest of the new of those coolest of the cool Portland/New Zealand boys in Unknown Mortal Orchestra—the message here is to keep it always and forever, well, cool.

Welcome back, sunshine.

The sun's out again after yesterday's autumn-y hiatus and I'm listening to the trip-y, Hindu-y, Temple of Doom-y acoustic mini-set that Animal Collective recorded at KEXP (both tracks are from their brand-spanking/ear-spanking new album Centipede Hz, but these recordings are remarkabl-y different—more akin to a float downriver).

Anyhoo. The return of summer weather has prodded my tongue in an appeal for a condensation-y, ice cold pint. Until C comes home I'll just have to watch this here beer commercial on repeat, stolen from the awesome dudes over at popflys (who musta stolen it from some place else).

Yep—the weekend. And as always, you'll need some polish for them weekend-ridin' boots. Here're some songs with real sheen. But if you like your boots rough and cow-pied, there's plenty here to do the trick. From dreamy pop to murder ballads—this week's Hymn de Fin has got you covered. So strap on your helmet 'n' give 'er a spin.

Climb into a car, the back of a pickup, a scooter, motorcycle, slap on some walking shoes, dust off the jetpack, the rollerblades, your bigwheel—the weekend, it's here. And you're gonna need some orchestration to roll along with that beautiful scenery.

Here's a Hymn de Fin mix that is sure to do the trick. Lovely roadtrip tunes from all over—Portland, Idaho, Sweden, San Francisco, New York, London, blah blah and blah. These songs, strung together, make for a perfect river/beach/forest/Mars/city/party-bound voyage. The swell and fall—enjoy!

It's here, it's here! The end of the week! Time now to turn the volume knob clockwise and flip open that lawn chair. Here's the week's Hymn de Fin, with both fresh tunes and old—Portlanders, Southerners, T-Rexian wonders, danceables and sleepables. Happy weekend!

It's time to get weird

Animal Collective has apparently turned around and run the other direction since their 2009 hit Merriweather Post Pavilion. Here's the official video for "Today's Supernatural" from AnCo's new record Centipede Hz, due out on September 4th.

I've always considered the band to be one enveloped in frequencies—from the metallic grating of Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished to the warm hum of Feels to the dripping wavelengths of MPP. And now, with Centipede, the band has packed up their sound and jumped into the sun! Take in the new frequencies at Animal Collective Radio. How splendid!

Hymn de Fin — 08.17.12

Time to take the weekend by the nose ring.

The weekend is watching from just around the corner. Tremble tremble tremble, it says. Workers pouring out onto the streets! Youngsters and old alike, hittin' the pavement, just itchin' to take me for a spin!

I don't know about you, but Friday's like a fuse and there's no better way to watch the weekend ignite than with a proper anthem. So...

Here is the very first "Hymn de Fin" — A musical swan dive into this week's finish line! I hope it inspires some old-fashioned fun.
